Horse Keeping and Land Management Masterclass Series

March 2, 2022 @ 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Join Tualatin and Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Alayne Blickle of Horses for Clean Water for this free six-week Masterclass Series on Horse Keeping and Land Management!

“As horse owners, there is much we can do to reduce the impact our horses have on the environment. The good news is, those same techniques are also good for our horses, our wallets, and our busy schedules,” says Blickle.

Whether you’re new to horse keeping or have years of experience, this course will help you learn ways to simplify your horse keeping checklist while managing your property in a way that benefits the entire ecosystem. That means less time cursing your wheelbarrow and more time doing the things you enjoy with your horse, all year long.

Each week features a live program where you can call in and listen to the program on your phone from the comfort of your own home – and it’s low-tech! We will provide the call-in information and handout materials for each workshop that you can review ahead of time and follow along with during the program. Just one hour a week will give you the tools you need to make the most of the spring and get you set up for the coming summer!

The six classes in this series will be on Wednesday nights, 6:30-7:30 PM Pacific Time. All classes are recorded and available to listen to at your convenience.

*Funding for this Masterclass Series provided by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Event Schedule:

Feb. 9th – Mud Management

Reduce mud to increase chore efficiency, improve horse health, and prevent runoff that pollutes surface water.

Feb. 16th – Manure Management

Manage the 50 pounds of manure each horse produces daily without raising a stink, attracting pests, or creating environmental problems.

Feb. 23rd – Pasture Management

Implement rotational grazing to prevent over-grazing, find out about non-toxic weed control methods, learn about small farm equipment, and find out how all of this meshes with horse health and climate resiliency.

March 2nd – Nature-Based Solutions

Discover nature-based solutions for mud management, weed and rodent control, conserving water, odor control, and on-farm recycling. Learn about barn owl boxes for rodent control, native plant dust-barriers for arenas, outdoor wash racks, and so much more!

March 9th – Firewise for Horse Owners

Identify wildfire risks around your horse property and learn steps you can take to minimize risks as well as ways to expedite an evacuation should wildfire happen.

March 23rd – Equine Enrichment

Learn about innovative horse-keeping techniques such as track paddocks, slow-feeders, horse toys, small-scale trail courses, group turnouts, and creative feeding options. Adding equine enrichment techniques makes a horse’s surroundings less static and more mentally stimulating, thereby enriching their welfare.

We have reached registration capacity for this masterclass. Please keep an eye out for future workshops!
